The measurement of soil structural parameters by image analysis

Fissure patterns were investigated in a pelostagnogley with 60% clay and a clay mineral suite dominated by interstratified mica-smectite. Samples were taken at 35% and 45% moisture contents as measured by the neutron probe. The samples were dried by acetone replacement of the water, impregnated with a Crystic resin containing a fluorescent dye and photographed using a flat face of the impregnated block in UV light. The fissure patterns at the two moisture states were analysed on Quantimet.
