The metabolism of pyruvate and oxaloacetate by intact maize mesophyll chloroplasts

Oxaloacetic acid (OAA) dependent O2 evolution was measured on maize leaf chloroplasts 4 weeks after germination using an O2 electrode. Addition of uncoupler (3 mM ammonium chloride) to preparations containing 2 mM OAA increased OAA dependent evolution 2- to 3-fold. Addition of phosphate + pyruvate stimulated OAA-dependent O2 evolution by 50-100%. Stimulation by pyruvate was phosphate dependent and required <more or =>1 mM P reaching a max. at 5 mM P.
