The microbial ecology of the large bowel of breast and formula-fed infants during the first year of life

The microbial ecology of the large bowel of breast and formula-fed infants during the first year of life

Dissertation Abstracts International, B Sciences and Engineering 44(10): 3000

During exclusive breast feeding, the large bowel microflora of 7 infants was composed mainly of bifidobacteria with low counts of facultatively anaerobic bacteria. In 7 formula-fed infants, counts of bifidobacteria were also high, but facultative anaerobes reached high counts and other anaerobes were detected.
