The mineralization of nitrogen in soils of lead, zinc and copper ore tailings in West Germany

Production of mineral nitrogen (Nmin) at 12 sites rich in heavy metals from 3 areas was determined. Of these, 6 were rich in Zn, Pb and Cu, 4 rich in Zn and Pb, and 2 rich in Cu only. For comparison, in every area (Harz Mountains, Blankenrode, Niedermarsberg in W. Germany) one additional site poor in heavy metals was investigated. Nmin production in the substrates rich in heavy metals was as high as in the substrates free from heavy metals.
