Assuming that cultivated maize is descended from teosinte (Zea/Euchlaena spp.), this survey deals with (1) intermediate forms between teosinte and maize, and (2) hypotheses of the origin of cultivated maize (including the tripartite hypothesis and the catastrophic sexual transmutation theory).
