The nephrotoxic potential of gentamicin in the cat: a pharmacokinetic and histopathologic investigation

The nephrotoxic potential of gentamicin in the cat: a pharmacokinetic and histopathologic investigation

Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics 9(3): 325-329

Eight cats were given gentamicin sulphate (4.4 mg/kg i/m) twice daily (0800 and 1600 h) for 12 days except on days 1, 6 and 12 when the first dose was given i/v. Blood samples were collected at intervals for 6 h after the i/v injections. Renal biopsies were taken from 6 control and 6 additional cats dosed as above for 6 or 12 days. Pharmacokinetics followed a two-compartment model. There were no significant changes in parameters on days 1, 6 and 12.
