Abstract
Gametosomatic hybrid plants were regenerated following the fusion of nitrate reductase deficient N. tabacum leaf mesophyll protoplasts with N. glutinosa pollen tetrad protoplasts. The 5 plants had the expected pentaploid, but functionally triploid, chromosome number of 3n = 5x = 60. Their hybrid nature was also confirmed on the basis of leaf and floral morphology and isoenzyme analysis.
