The quality of irrigation ground-water in Qatar and its effect on the development of agriculture

Journal of Arid Environments 7(1): 101-106

Water samples were collected from 150 wells in cultivated and abandoned farms throughout Qatar during 1980-1982, and subjected to chemical analysis. Na+ was the dominant cation over the entire range of electric conductivity (EC), followed by Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+. The ratio of Ca2+ to Mg2+ was almost constant, being 1.5:1 at EC 1.380 mmhos/cm and 1.4:1 at EC 28.350 mmhos/cm. K+ was present in small quantities, but its concentration increased with EC. Cl- was the dominant anion followed by SO42-.
