In a field trial in Poland in 1972-5, maize was grown as a 2nd crop following winter rye harvested for forage and given 0, 60, 120, 180 or 240 kg N/ha as urea or ammonium nitrate. The residual N not utilized by rye and taken up by maize ranged from 16 to 38% of the total rate depending on the fertilizer and the rate of application. It increased fresh and DM yields, the percentage of cobs in the total yield, and the content and yield of protein and reduced the CF in the DM.
