The survival of protoscolices of Echinococcus multilocularis (Cestoda) at constant temperatures

The survival of protoscolices of Echinococcus multilocularis (Cestoda) at constant temperatures

Proceedings of the Helminthological Society of Washington 51(2): 343-345

Cotton rats containing a 3 to 5 month cystic growth of E. multilocularis were killed and intact carcasses were stored at a constant temperature (ranging from -10 to 50 degrees C). One g samples of cystic material removed from similar rats, and free protoscoleces were also stored (in 0.85% NaCl) at the same temperatures. Survival was assessed by evagination, motility and, in questionable cases, the presence of flame-cell activity.
