The use of host resistance genes in the field, radiation, and a chemical mutagen to identify or change the virulence spectrum of the leaf rust pathogen Puccinia recondita Rob. ex. Desm. f. sp. tritici

Mutant cultures of P. recondita were obtained by both radiation and chemical mutagenesis. All were screened on the wheat cultivar Agent, which carries the resistance gene LR24. No mutant culture contained the virulence spectrum sought (i.e. virulence against host resistance genes LR1 and LR24 and avirulence towards LR3). The mutant cultures produced 8 virulence/avirulence patterns when inoculated on 8 differential hosts. All mutant cultures were virulent on LR1, LR10, LR3 and LR24.
