Tissue turnover in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) during winter

Tissue turnover in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) during winter

Irish Journal of Agricultural Research 24(1): 49-62

ISSN/ISBN: 0578-7483

DOI: 10.2307/25556102

Leaf tissue turnover in labeled tillers of perennial ryegrass (cv Vigor) was correlated with air temperature. The relationship was affected by vernalization which occurred during Jan. Net leaf production was negative at lower temperatures in both the vernalized and unvernalized state. The threshold temperature at which the net rate became positive was at about 5.degree. C in the former and 8.degree. C in the latter. Whole tiller turnover was not affected by vernalization or by temperature. The ratio of tiller appearance to leaf appearance was related to radiation.
