Groups of 120 dairy cows, on pasture in summer and given in stalls in winter prewilted grass silage as main roughage, received 2 kg concentrate, chiefly of wheat and barley, daily, also straw pellets untreated or treated with about 2% NaOH and containing 5% sugarbeet pulp and sometimes 3% urea. Daily DM intake was from 11.9 to 12.8 kg on pasture and from 10.8 to 13.1 kg in stalls and was, on average, 0.44 kg more with treated than with untreated pellets.
