Verification of the life-cycles of Diplostomum spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. pseudospathaceum Niewiadomska, 1984 (Trematoda, Diplostomidae)

, : Verification of the life-cycles of Diplostomum spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. pseudospathaceum Niewiadomska, 1984 (Trematoda, Diplostomidae). Systematic Parasitology, 81: 23-31

D. spathaceum cercariae were present in 0.23% of 875 Lymnaea peregra from Lake Warniak and Lake Dgal Wielki (Mazurian Lakeland, Poland) and D. pseudospathaceum cercariae in 0.11% of L. peregra, and in 0.27% of the 4825 L. turricula and L. stagnalis in both lakes.

The life-cycles of Diplostomum spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. pseudospathaceum Niewiadomska, 1984 are presented as being in agreement with the status of these species as outlined by Niewiadomska (1984). The literature concerning the life cycle and morphology of adults has furnished evidence that in the diagnosis of D. spathaceum 2 distinct species are confused. One of these species was named D. helveticum (Dubois, 1928) Shigin, 1977; the other re...

The study lays stress on the morphological variability of metacercariae of Diplostomum pseudospathaceum under the influence of four factors: species and size of the host and density and age of the parasites. A total of 22 experiments were made, us...

Recent confocal microscopy studies have greatly expanded our knowledge of muscle systems in cercariae and adult digeneans, but the gross anatomy and development of metacercarial musculature remain relatively little known. To further our understand...

Attention is drawn to the morphological variability of D. spathaceum metacercariae due to the effect of 4 factors: species and size of the host, and density and age of the parasites. 19 experiments were carried out, using 137 fish belonging to 7 s...
