Vitamin A requirement of growing pigs. 3. Effect of vitamin A on health of piglets and fattening pigs

, : Vitamin A requirement of growing pigs. 3. Effect of vitamin A on health of piglets and fattening pigs. Archiv fur Tierernahrung 35(2): 97-108

Trials with a total of 2035 pigs of from 6.5 to 114 kg are reported. With a casein and starch diet devoid of vitamin A and carotene and a diet of cereal and soyabean oilmeal containing about 2 mg carotene and no vitamin signs of deficiency, especially nervous and vocal disorders, appeared after 7 to 8 and 16 to 19 weeks. Epithelial hyper- and metaplasia occurred in the large salivary gland ducts. Deficiency was confirmed by oral and intramuscular repletion studies.

Immunocytochemical methods were used to localize Tamm-Horsfall-like immunoreactivity in 3 substra...
