Water uptake, germination and seedling growth of 12 cv. belonging to 4 botanical groups of groundnuts were studied under polyethylene glycol 6000 simulated moisture stress ranging from -1 to -10 bar water potential. Seeds showed max. rates of water uptake during the first 4 h. Seed water contents were 36.4-71.5% at 4 h and 56.7-113.9% at 24 h. Under -10 bar water potential the seed water content decreased to 41.6-83.3% at 24 h. Water uptake by seeds showed no differences amongst botanical groups in spite of varietal differences.
