N and P uptake by grains and straw of Pennisetum americanum and water use efficiency were significantly higher with irrigation at 50% available soil moisture than without irrigation, with increasing rates of applied N (50-150 kg/ha) than without N and at a spacing of 45 x 15 cm than at 30 x 15 or 60 x 15 cm.
