The effect of water stress at various growth stages of spring wheat Sappo was studied in lysimeter experiments in 1980. Water stress reduced grain yield regardless of the growth stage at which it occurred. Temporary water stress before heading caused the development of tillers which appeared after heading had ceased and ripened 2 wk later than normal tillers. In grain yield from normal tillers only, the greatest reduction was caused by water stress in the vegetative stage.
