Yield and protein content of grain of spring barley cultivars in relation to nitrogen fertilizer and sowing rate

In 131 field trials in all the barley-growing areas of Poland in 1981-83, the effects of 0-90 kg N/ha and sowing rates of 2.4, 3.1 or 3.8 million seeds/ha on barley Diva, Menuet, Athos and Grit were studied. 60-90 kg N/ha increased grain yield and protein content and protein yield of all compared with 30 kg N. There were sowing rate x N rate interactions, with the higher sowing rate more advantageous at low N rates.
