An epidemiologic study of mortality in veal calves subsequent to an episode of zinc toxicosis on a California veal calf operation using zinc sulfate-supplemented milk replacer

An epidemiologic study of mortality in veal calves subsequent to an episode of zinc toxicosis on a California veal calf operation using zinc sulfate-supplemented milk replacer

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association 190(10): 1296-1301

Zinc sulphate-supplemented milk replacer was fed to 95 commercially reared male Holstein veal calves and resulted in an episode of zinc toxicosis. Clinical signs appeared 23 days after feeding of milk replacer commenced and included: polydipsia, polyphagia, anorexia, diarrhoea, bloat, cardiac arrhythmia, convulsions, and pneumonia. The pattern of mortality during the episode was that of a point source intoxication that slowed after removal of the source.
