Assessment of damage caused by the leaf-eating beetles, Podagrica spp. on okra in south-western Nigeria

Leaf damage caused by the chrysomelids Podagrica sjostedti and P. uniformis to okra in south-western Nigeria was assessed in 1976 and 1979. Mechanical simulation of defoliation was compared with different levels of natural infestation established using Nuvacron at 150, 300 or 500 g a.i./ha. Continuous mechanical defoliation of 20 and 30% of the leaf area caused a significant reduction in yield and yield characters of 18-30% compared with the control.
