Assessment of energy expenditure during spawning by male sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, at various sex ratios in the spawning ground

Journal of Ichthyology 26(1): 89-97

Data were obtained on the metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) and milt production of 66 large, medium and small (3, 2 and 1 yr of ocean life resp.) when mixed with at different sex ratios. The were studied in groups of a single age-class. On the basis of milt production and behavioural dominance, the of each age-class were divisible into 2 or 3 subgroups, designated alpha , beta and gamma.
