Assessment of environmental impacts of Sarda Sahayak Canal Irrigation Projects of Uttar Pradesh Government, India

Assessment of environmental impacts of Sarda Sahayak Canal Irrigation Projects of Uttar Pradesh Government, India

International Journal of Environmental Studies 28(2/3): 123-130

The Sarda Sahayak Canal Irrigation Project in Uttar Pradesh has caused serious environmental problems from its commissioning in 1974. Seepage has damaged 385 villages, 13 677 houses, 2200 cattle, and killed mature natural forests with Sal trees. Large tracts are waterlogged because of seepage and high water tables, resulting in the spread of malaria, filaria and skin diseases. Suggestions are made to aid the management of irrigation schemes.
