The nature of fires (generally underground) in contaminated land, sources of ignition and combustion processes are discussed. A report is given of work to determine critical temperatures for self-ignition, and the speed of smouldering in wire mesh cylinders, in bulk and under cover, using simulated landfill materials. Mixtures of kieselguhr with 2-50% woodflour and with 10-50% carbon powder were used. Heat of combustion was not a good measure of combustibility.
