Assessment of iron nutrition among young Japanese females by multivariate analysis

To determine whether principal component analysis can serve to clarify iron nutrition among young Japanese females, a dietary survey was carried out by estimating iron availability in each meal. Then, fasting blood was obtained and used for measuring serum iron, ferritin and unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), as well as hematological examinations. The mean daily intakes of energy, protein and iron were 1890 kcal, 70.9 g, and 8.6 mg, respectively. The incidences of anemia and hypoferritinemia were 2.6% and 66.7%. Component analysis with these data revealed that serum ferritin loaded both on the nutritional (1st) and hematological (2nd) component. On the other hand, the factor loadings of serum iron and UIBC were predominant at the 3rd component. Among the intakes of nutrients, the intake of low available iron was the only variable that loaded negatively to the nutritional component. These data suggest that the component analysis can serve to clarify the marginal iron nutrition of these subjects. Furthermore, it is indicated that the intake of low available iron increases as the intake of other nutrients decreases in these subjects.(author)
