Assimilate transfer and accumulation within the maize pedicel

Sugar, amino acid and 14C assimilate unloading from the pedicel were studied following removal of the endosperm and embryo of maize. Assimilate unloading from the pedicel was shown to be passive and was reduced by 50% when 800 mM mannitol, glucose or fructose were applied to the pedicel free space, probably due to effects on cell turgor. Assimilate uptake into the endosperm, rather than unloading from the pedicel, was the rate-limiting transfer process.
