Assimilation of 15NO3 by plants during the light/dark cycle and extended darkness

Young, rapidly growing tobacco plants were exposed to 15NO3- for 6-h intervals during a 12/12 h light/dark cycle and during 30 h of extended darkness. The concentration of non-structural carbohydrates in plants declined sharply in the initial 12 h of darkness, and approached minimum levels during the subsequent 18 h of darkness coincident with a 60% decline in root respiration rates.
