Assimilation of nitrates and ammonium by plant roots and leaves at different levels of nitrogen nutrition

Assimilation of nitrates and ammonium by plant roots and leaves at different levels of nitrogen nutrition

Soviet Plant Physiology 33(4, II): 553-560

A comparative study was made of assimilation of nitrates and ammonium by roots and leaves of Lupinus albus, maize and Xanthium pensylvanicum at different levels of N nutrition. At low rates of applied nitrates their assimilation occurred mainly in the roots of all 3 species, but with high rates of nitrates, their assimilation occurred in both roots and leaves. Assimilation of N in plants given ammonium N was higher than in plants given nitrate N.
