Association of Campylobacter pylori with gastritis, duodenal ulcer and gastric ulcer: a preliminary report of dyspeptic patients

Association of Campylobacter pylori with gastritis, duodenal ulcer and gastric ulcer: a preliminary report of dyspeptic patients

Indian Journal of Gastroenterology 7(3): 141-142

Campylobacter pylori was sought (using microscopy, culture and appropriate biochemical tests) in antral mucosal biopsy-specimens obtained endoscopically from 95 patients in Bombay, India, between June 1985 and December 1986; 52 had gastritis, 38 a duodenal ulcer (DU), and 5 a gastric ulcer (GU). All of them had "abdominal dyspepsia". C. pylori was demonstrated in 16 (30%), 7 (18%) and 0 who were suffering from the 3 diseases respectively; all of those with a DU also had histological evidence of gastritis (details of severity are provided). Biopsies were also taken from the body of the stomach in 9 cases but none showed evidence of a C. pylori infection. The overall incidence of positive biopsy-specimens was therefore substantially lower than that found in groups of "Western" patients; to convince themselves (and the reader) of this fact, the authors carried out statistical comparisons between their results and those from various published series from the UK and Australia, with convincing results.G.C.
