Association of different components of seed and oil in linseed

At the phenotypic level 10 varieties, viz. 'T 397', 'Jawahar 23', 'LMH 328', 'SPS 77/49-2', 'SPS 77/30-3', 'LMH 408', 'LMH 360', 'LMH 438', 'LMH 350' and 'CS 9', of linseed (Linum usitatissimum Linn.) showed negative and significant correlation of oil content of the seed with the fibre content. The iodine value was positively correlated with linolenic acid, but negatively with stearic acid and oleic acid. The oleic acid was negatively correlated with linolenic acid. Of the various traits, iodine and saponification values had direct positive effect on the oil content. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid exhibited high negative direct effects on oil content. The fibre content of the seed showing significant negative correlation operated mainly though its direct effect as well as via linoleic acid, linolenic acid and protein content. The iodine value was positively and substantially influenced directly by linolenic acid and its indirect effect on iodine value via all other fatty acids except palmitic acid was negative. Linoleic and oleic acids also had direct positive but its major effect through linolenic acid was negative. Similarly, the significant negative correlation between iodine value and oleic acid was also mainly due to the high indirect effect of oleic via linolenic acid.
