Association of heat shock proteins of maize with mitochondria in vivo and in vitro

The association of heat shock proteins of maize seedlings with mitochondria was studied in vivo and in vitro. Plant treatments with heat shock led to the synthesis of heat shock proteins of molecular mass of 18-27, 67 and 76 kD which were able to associate with mitochondria. The most abundant fraction of heat shock proteins was that of low-molecular-weight polypeptides (18-27 kD). The association of heat shock proteins with isolated mitochondria in vitro took place only at 41.degree., whereas the proteins failed to associate at normal temperature.
