Association of seedling vigor with semi-dwarf plant type and other agronomic traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Mesocotyl, coleoptile and panicle length and plant height were measured from the seedling stage in 4 parents and 6 hybrids. A lack of uniformity in mesocotyl and coleoptile development in 2 of the parents indicated that significant improvements could be made through selection of semidwarf plants with a long mesocotyl and coleoptile within existing semidwarf rice germplasm. Among the traits studied, a strong correlation was only observed between mesocotyl and coleoptile elongation.
