Assortative mating for age in dairy herds

Assortative mating for age in dairy herds

Sbornik Nauchnykh Trudov, Moskovskaya Veterinarnaya Akademiya (147): 25-28

Kholmogor bulls aged <less or =>6, 7-8 or <more or =>9 yr were mated with cows grouped as follows: (1) 1st-3rd calving; (2) 4th-6th calving; (3) <more or =>6th calving. There were 98-127 cows per age group. The highest milk fat yield was obtained for matings of old bulls with young cows (average = 154.1 kg), and the lowest for matings of young bulls with middle-aged and old cows (138.2 and 138.5 kg resp.).
