Asteroid body in sporotrichosis: specificity and differentiation from other asteroid forms

Asteroid body in sporotrichosis: specificity and differentiation from other asteroid forms

Biomedica 5(1/2): 11-23

A total of 86 sporotrichosis biopsies and others of varied granulomatous diseases were analyzed. The author concluded from this study and a review of the literature that 2 different types of asteroid bodies exist; the first type is located inside vacuoles of multinucleated giant cells of diverse granulomatous diseases including leprosy, sarcoidosis, paracoccidioidomycosis and lobomycosis. These are morphologically identical, nonspecific and provide little help towards a specific diagnosis.
