Asymptomatic toxocariasis in children. A prospective study and treatment trial

Asymptomatic toxocariasis in children. A prospective study and treatment trial

Clinical Pediatrics 26(9): 441-446

Toxocara canis infection was detected by ELISA in 16% of 153 asymptomatic Hispanic children in Massachusetts, USA, screened from May 1978 to April 1984. 56% of the ELISA-positive group had increased total eosinophil counts, and 52% of the ELISA-positive children lived in homes where another household member was also seropositive. 11 children treated with thiabendazole (one or 2 four-day courses of 25mg/kg or a 3 day course of 50 mg/kg) and 9 controls were followed up for a year; treatment did not appear to alter the course of the infection as measured by eosinophil counts and specific T. canis antibody titres. Follow-up for up to 7 years failed to demonstrate any clinical sequelae.
