Attack success of Amblyseius mckenziei and the stage related defensive capacity of thrips larvae

Attack success of Amblyseius mckenziei and the stage related defensive capacity of thrips larvae

Bulletin SROP 10(2): 26-29

Laboratory observations on the predacious behaviour of the phytoseiid Amblyseius mckenziei revealed that hungry predators were more successful than well-fed ones in seizing 1st-instar larvae of Thrips tabaci. Second-instar larvae of T. tabaci appeared harder to capture than first-instar ones, irrespective of the predator's state of starvation. This difference in attack success was found to be related to the differential ability of the prey stages to counter attack.
