Attacks of corrosion on a 16th-century helmet through decomposition of conservation agents

Attacks of corrosion on a 16th-century helmet through decomposition of conservation agents

Livrustkammaren 17(2): 79-92

The helmet was kept in a closed glass showcase which was affected by water condensation under certain abnormal environmental conditions. The preservative (comprising lanolin, vegetable fats and water) formed an emulsion favouring growth of microorganisms which produced lipolytic enzymes which converted the fats to free fatty acids which corroded the helmet.
