Australia and New Zealand: the role of agriculture in a closer economic relationship

Australia and New Zealand: the role of agriculture in a closer economic relationship

World food policies Toward agricultural interdependence: 63-75

Both Australia and New Zealand have relied considerably on overseas trade for national development and prosperity. As a result of a Closer Economic Relations agreement (CER) signed in 1983, and designed to establish a comprehensive trans-Tasman free trade area by the mid-1990s, their trade and economic ties are to be given a boost. This paper sketches the background and nature of the CER agreement and discusses the particular role of agricultural policies in the context of CER.
