Although not one of Europe's leading tourist destinations, Austria's landlocked position in Europe, and particularly its location for GFR travellers en route to the Mediterranean sun, means that expenditure by foreign visitors represented a high 7.5% of GNP in 1985, one of the highest proportions for any OECD country.
