Between 1970 and 1983/84 milk production in Austria increased by >20%, but home consumption of milk and milk products increased by only about 10%, so that in 1984/85 there was an overproduction of 573 000 t, more than twice that in 1970 and 24% of total milk production. Production of hard and soft cheeses in the same period both increased by 84%, with corresponding increases in home consumption of 14.4 and 83.7%.
