Austrian hard ticks as vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi, overview

Austrian hard ticks as vectors of Borrelia burgdorferi, overview

Zentralblatt fur Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie und Hygiene, Series A 263(1-2): 79-82

The results are given of a survey of Austrian Ixodidae, conducted by flag dragging and capture of mammalian and bird hosts. The author lists the tick species found (of which Ixodes ricinus was the commonest) and their hosts, and indicates their habitat preferences and other aspects of their ecology. The numbers of I. ricinus from different regions of Austria which were infected with Borrelia burgdorferi are tabulated. The percentage of ticks infected with the spirochaete varied from 2.24 to 40, with a mean infection rate of 20%.
