Maize was grown in 1981-84 in field trials with (a) no irrigation, (b) 50 mm irrigation in the previous autumn or (c) 120, 180, 220 and 235 mm irrigation during the growing season. Treatment (b) after ploughing in maize straw gave highest grain production/1 mm irrigation water in 1981-83 (12.54-14.20 kg grain/mm) with a max. value in 1984 of 17.60 kg/mm but this was exceeded in that year in the treatment with straw removal (31.80 kg/mm).
