Basis for breeding Valeriana officinalis L., valerian

Observations on a number of genotypes including the lines 4 and 6 (selected from Erfurter Breitblattriger), 44 (from Polka) and 16 suggested that the end of October was the best time for selecting for drug content. For manual emasculation, the best time was at the 'swelling bud' stage; a delay of at least 3 days between emasculation and pollination resulted in 85% seed set. Chemical emasculation was possible using 9-hydroxyfluorene-9-carboxylic acid.
