Recent changes in the status of arthropod pests of vegetables grown in commercial greenhouses in Denmark are reviewed, and attention is drawn to the increasing importance of Thrips tabaci on cucumber and the agromyzid Liriomyza bryoniae on tomato and cucumber. Notes are also given on the results of a survey conducted amongst market gardeners in Denmark to determine the extent to which biological control is practised in the greenhouse. These include data on the use of Phytoseiulus persimilis for the control of Tetranychus urticae on cucumber, the use of the aphelinid Encarsia formosa against the aleyrodid Trialeurodes vaporariorum on tomato and the use of the cecidomyiid Aphidoletes aphidimyza against aphids on sweet pepper [Capsicum]; and outlines of current research on the possibility of using the predacious phytoseiid Amblyseius mckenziei for the control of Thrips tabaci and the braconid parasite Dacnusa sibirica and the eulophid parasite Diglyphus isaea for the control of Liriomyza bryoniae on tomato and cucumber. The results of the survey indicated that biological control of mites, whiteflies and aphids was slightly cheaper than chemical control.
