In 14CO2 labelling experiments, Holme wheat (plump-grained) showed a rapid incorporation of dry matter (mainly starch); the plump-grained rye Kungs II incorporated starch slowly but had a long grain-filling period, while the plump-grained triticale Lasko incorporated starch more slowly than Holme but was characterized by a rapid incorporation of cell wall material early in grain filling.
