Chemical control of shootfly and stem borer in sorghum

Two field trials were carried out in Tamil Nadu, India, in 1981-82 to compare the effectiveness of prophylactic and need-based insecticidal applications against Atherigona soccata and Chilo partellus on sorghum. Prophylactic furrow application of carbofuran at 3 g/m row against A. soccata and whorl application at 2.5 and 3 kg/acre 25 and 35 days after germination, respectively, was effective and resulted in higher grain yields than need-based applications in both years.
