The stereochemistry of natural abscisic acid and its biosynthetic pathway in higher plants and Cercospora cruenta (Mycosphaerella cruenta) are outlined. Biologically active alpha -methylene- gamma -butyrolactones, unsaturated lactones, polyacetylenes, phytotoxins and antimicrobial substances are discussed. The inhibitory effects of alpha -methylene- gamma -butyrolactones on the IAA-induced straight growth of Avena coleoptiles are presented.
