A series of observations were recorded on the colour pattern of skin and hair on various regions of the body of Murrah, swamp and Murrah X swamp buffaloes. Black pigmentation was predominant in the skin and hair of Murrah buffaloes, and grey to grey-black hair was predominant in the swamp buffalo. The proportion of black hair increased with increasing content of the Murrah breed.
