Comparative efficacy of certain new insecticides in the control of leaf hoppers and bollworms of cotton

Experiments were conducted to control leafhoppers and bollworms on cotton by certain new insecticides during 1972-73 and 1973-74 at the Regional Research Station, Dharwad. Eleven insecticides were tested and all of them showed good effect in reducing the leafhoppers nymph populations varying from 42.89 per cent being lowest in parachlor (methylparathion + DDT) to 51.23 per cent being highest hexatox-super. The reduction in shedding percentage of squares, flower buds and young bolls due to bollworms varied from 7.61 per cent being lowest in methamidophos to 24.54 per cent being highest in endosulfan. The percentage of reduction in attacked bolls varied from 13.48 per cent being lowest in metacid-combi (methylparathion + DDT) to 35.64 per cent being highest in monocrotophos. The increase in good open bolls varied from 34.07 per cent being lowest in metacid-Combi to 76.93 per cent being highest in monocrotophos over control. The percentage increase in yield over untreated control varied from 104.04 per cent being lowest in metacid-Combi to 185.5 per cent being highest in carbaryl.
