In field trials in 1976-79 rye grown as a winter catch crop was given 60-240 kg mineral N/ha and maize grown as a 2nd crop was given 80-320 kg N, or 140-840 kg slurry N was applied all before sowing the rye or in split applications to rye (60-360 kg N) and maize (80-480 kg). Rye DM yields increased from 2.32 t/ha without N to 3.64-4.71 t with mineral N, and 2.79-3.98 and 3.75-4.48 t with split and single slurry applications, resp.
